"Amazing" describes LoRheda's custom-made beadwork purses, belts, and other memorabilia! LoRheda was taught to bead by her grandmother in Southern Oklahoma, and has beaded all of her life. Her grandmother taught her how to intricately bead by using a flour sack tea towel. "It wasn't until I was totally grown, and started working for the museum of New Mexico as Assistant Director of New Mexico State Monuments and had to curate beadwork, when I realized I could do the same. I started beading. I have taught beadwork classes everywhere I have been since then, because I worked at museums for most of my later life in the Southwest. Interestingly enough, I have five daughters and none of them bead. My favorite things that I have beaded have been my pillows. Many of the pieces that I have made are now in my daughters' possession, some of them at their request and some because they have received them as a gift. I have given them a handmade strike-a-light bag. Strike-a-light bags were Native American bags that carried supplies with which to make a fire. They were made for both men and women. Even small children wore belts that had a knife and strike-a-light bag with them." We are fortunate to have LoRheda share her talent with us. Join LoRheda for her beading class every Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in the Activity Room.
